Important Note on Breathing Practices
Breathing exercises are widely recognized as powerful tools for grounding, increasing body awareness, and returning to a regulated state of being. They are especially helpful for developing mindfulness and reconnecting with one's physical presence.
However, it is crucial to consider potential risks when working with participants who have experienced a recent loss. In the early stages of grief, breathing practices may unintentionally trigger traumatic imagery or emotional flashbacks. For example, some individuals may associate deep breathing with the image of a breathless body of a loved one, which can lead to re-traumatization rather than relief.
While every case is unique and responses vary, facilitators are strongly encouraged to assess the group’s emotional landscape before introducing breathing practices. When in doubt, offer opt-in options or alternatives that involve grounding through the senses (e.g. touch, sound, visual cues) instead of breath-focused techniques.
Please approach this with care and sensitivity.
