A Unified Guide for Facilitators Working with Sensitive Topics
This section provides a shared framework for creating and holding a safe space across all activities in this toolkit. It brings together principles and practices developed by partner organizations and aligns them into one coherent, trauma-informed and ethically grounded approach to facilitation.
The concept of “safe space” in this toolkit does not mean avoiding difficult topics, emotions, or disagreement.
Rather, it refers to creating conditions in which participants can engage with sensitive issues without fear of humiliation, coercion, or additional harm, and where choice, dignity, and emotional regulation are prioritized at every stage of the process. This guidance is relevant for facilitators working with topics such as war, displacement, identity, power, grief, migration, politics, religion, gender, democracy, and other issues that may evoke strong emotional responses or touch on lived trauma.
Why This Matters
In contexts shaped by war, displacement, and polarization, young people often experience a loss of control, voice, and safety. A well-held space does not erase these realities — but it can restore dignity, agency, and trust, even temporarily.
